eight purple irises appeared
\nthis morning without demanding
\nthat i look— i was pulled to see,
\nwhile poised on hands and knees<\/p>\n

digging in the dirt puts me
\nin a suspended reverie
\nwhile breathing, discovering
\nboth the origin and the finality<\/p>\n

in blossom, green stems
\nand leaf–so close
\nto home, we
\ncan barely touch<\/p>\n

abstraction–ever again–
\nand so still life begs
\nto be painted, held,
\nand fussed over within<\/p>\n

the window of time
\nturning over the soil
\nbreaking down the alabaster
\nof roosts and joists<\/p>\n

holding up heaven
\nto rebuild in live materials
\nno guarantees in this construction
\neven with the proper use of gerund<\/p>\n

the adverb shall follow the verb
\ndown any grassy lane- towards
\nany green river teaming
\nwith fresh water fish<\/p>\n

swimming
\nfor their brief life
\nmaking shining impressions
\nin the may light, as they<\/p>\n

in finality get caught
\nreeled in and poached
\nwith white wine, fresh herbs, lemon
\nattentive eyes on current’s pull<\/p>\n

and still the late day sun bobs
\natop the moving river
\nas salmon spawn
\nsoon after dark<\/p>\n

Down by the river
\nriparian planting witch hazel,
\nnanny berries, hop tree, button bush,
\nblack haw viburnum
\nwith shovel and muscle and weight of work
\nin mud and dirt and root and rock
\nplanning for future
\npaying for now
\ngrowing earth
\ngoing good
\nrepairing medicine wheel<\/p>\n
